Jim Bowie has more than 17 years experience leading continuous process improvement efforts in multiple environments and industries around the world.
He served as the Operations Manager for Air Cargo Express, an airfreight transportation corporation that coordinated global logistics and provided direct service in the mid-Atlantic region, working alongside major clients to integrate best supply chain and lean practices through their distribution channels and transactional environments.
While serving as an Infantry officer in the United States Army, Jim standardized advanced marksmanship procedures and was quickly promoted to the Regimental staff in order to apply his capabilities across enterprise-level processes. He also earned a flawless battle record of 40 victories and zero losses as a Motorized Rifle Company Commander at the National Training Center.
At the end of his tour, Jim was recruited by Tyco Healthcare to lead syringe production in Norfolk, Nebraska. He was immediately placed at the lead of Lean Six Sigma efforts involving capacity optimization and production maximization. His efforts were noticed by Graco Children’s Products, and he was recruited to evaluate and improve leadership and operational practices in their children’s car seat manufacturing plant in Macedonia, Ohio. He introduced lean concepts and the principles of the visual workplace across the union facility, and increased production quantity and quality while significantly reducing scrap rates and injuries.
Jim joined the Army Reserve and volunteered for a tour in Iraq. He was sent to Camp Victory in Baghdad where he improved efficiency and efficacy of numerous tracking systems, established the Multi-National Corps Transition Cell, served as liaison to all Army units in the Iraqi Theater of Operations, and analyzed and prepared reports for the Secretary of Defense. His success in Iraq earned him the distinguished rating of top company grade officer on the Corps staff.
Upon returning from his tour in Iraq, Jim continued to serve as a contractor for L-3 Communications at Fort Monroe, Virginia (US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC)). He was the Command-selected lead for the establishment of the Architecture Integration and Management Directorate (AIMD) LandWarNet Technical Integration Cell (LTIC). In this role, he performed high level/expert design, development, integration, validation, and evaluation of procedures, processes, techniques, and methodologies to develop information sets for Department of Defense branches.
United States Gypsum (USG) approached Jim and requested that he lead a consolidated supply chain department at their flagship facility in Gypsum, Ohio. As the Plant Supply Chain Manager, he established the department and developed a systematic approach that optimized efficiency, inventory requirements, and customer demands simultaneously across five facilities without increased overhead.
He had the opportunity once again to serve his country in a civilian role as a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt with BearingPoint where he assisted in the development of the content and methodology for Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century (AFSO21). He was consistently requested for high-visibility, challenging assignments across the United States and selected by-name by the PACAF Commander to lead the pilot base-level event at Kunsan Air Base, ROK. Jim also worked closely with senior leadership to develop and implement an enterprise-level strategy for AF/A3/5.
Jim transferred to Booz Allen Hamilton to support the Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command in Warren, Michigan. He served as the Program Executive Office Ground Combat Systems (PEO GCS) Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, providing program management, mentorship, and facilitation for senior leaders in Modular Brigade Enhancements, Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Robotic Systems, Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, and Towed Artillery Digitization.
Jim is Kaplan & Norton Balanced Scorecard Certified, a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt (including ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt), an ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence, a Certified Project Management Professional, a Lean Operations Sensei, and a certified Level II AFSO21 Facilitator. He is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality, a member of: the Society for Manufacturing Engineers; the Balanced Scorecard Collaborative, and; the National Speaker’s Association. Mr. Bowie’s expertise was most recently recognized as he was selected to serve as a member of the 2010 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. His educational track has included Salisbury University, Villanova University, University of Tennessee, Yale School of Management, University of Michigan, and he received his Executive Master of Business Administration through Auburn University.
